TRAE YOUNG

ADIDAS (2021)

This project was an exploration and development of three hero videos for the upcoming shoe collaboration between Trae Young and Adidas. I worked as a motion design artist and concept artist for Los York, developing individual animations and editing the piece.

The frames are revisions of material provided by Adidas. I helped simplify the visuals and make fewer elements work better together. Part of my job was designing the consistent assets that populate the videos (the look and animation of the windows, the type animation, backgrounds and color combinations, motion patterns and textures…).

For the hero video I animated the introduction with the “old school” 3D layered comp. I designed the frame and animated the movement of layers, adding focus blur and wiggles to create an organic look that would contrast with the digital feel of the final shots.

I was inspired by movie titles squences and Netflix’s “Abstract”!

I always loved these blueprint drawings of shoes and wanted to find a way to include it. Really happy with how it came out.

Making a bounding box that moves and reacts to changes in scale is not as easy as I thought!

One of my favorite ideas was the ice-breaking Basketball backboard, which was not part of the original brief. I made some explorations before I landed on a board that splits when the ball comes in.

I would have preferred the hand-drawn look but it was too playful for the brief.
